The National Trust for the Development of African American Men is leading the Free The Hood 2010 campaign to release African-American culture from the grip of prison values and criminal ethics through partnering with local leaders to fight back against the prison culture’s invasion of our homes, schools, neighborhoods and cities.

Over the course of 2009 the campaign will:

1. Work with prisoners, not against them, to instill the traditional African-American values of cooperative behavior, collective behavior, non-violence, love, trust, respect and responsibility as they re-enter our neighborhoods.
2. Develop a network of local advocates and assist them in taking a clear stand on acceptable behavior in their communities and helping ex-offenders unlearn prison values and rejoin civil society.
3. Establish a working partnership with corrections and the African-American community to start rehabilitating  incarcerated people before they return home.
4. Create Children of the Sun Schools in African-American communities that teach traditional African-American history culture and values. This cultural education offers the next generation of young people an alternative to the drugs, violence, crime and urban decay that are all too often regarded as the entire black experience.
